NEC Selects Supermicro GPU Systems for One of Japan’s Largest Supercomputers for Advanced AI Research

SANJOS, California, October 10, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Supermicro (NASDAQ: SMCI), a provider of global computing solutions for Cloud, AI/ML, Storage and 5G/Edgeannounced that NECCorporation has selected over 116 Supermicro GPU servers incorporating dual-socket 3rd generation IntelXeon Scalable processors, each with eight 80GB NVIDIAA100 GPUs. As a result, Supermicro’s line of GPU servers will be able to include the latest and most powerful IntelXeon scalable processors and NVIDIA’s most advanced AI GPUs.

The NEC supercomputer for AI research is used to maintain and strengthen its reputation in the development of AI. This AI supercomputer will become the largest in the industry in Japan, with a performance of more than 580ptaflops. Hundreds of AI researchers are already using part of the NEC system. The addition of this 580ptaflops system from Supermicro will make it the leading dedicated AI research and development environment in Japan, helping to accelerate the development of more advanced AI algorithms. This solution is based on the NVIDIAHGXtm AI supercomputer platform which includes NVIDIANVLink and the NVIDIANVSwitchtm.

Specifically, Supermicro’s new systems include the server SYS-420GP-TNARwhich is optimized for large-scale distributed learning applications. Each server contains two IntelXeonPlatinum8358 processors (32cores, 2.6GHz), 1TB of memory and eight 80GB NVIDIAA100 TensorCore GPUs. Local storage for each server consists of one 1.9TB NVMe SSD and four 7.6TB NVMe SSDs for data. The interconnect between the servers consists of five single-port NVIDIAConnectX-6 interfaces and a single dual-port NVIDIAConnectX-6 interface for storage.
