Launch of the PyTorch Foundation to advance AI research

Points to remember:

  • PyTorch, one of the largest community programming environments for AI research, will now be managed by the new independent PyTorch Foundation, which will be part of the Linux Foundation.
  • The PyTorch Foundation will democratize access to cutting-edge AI tools, libraries, and other components, with the goal of advancing AI.
  • Meta will continue to invest in PyTorch and use it as the primary framework for AI research and production applications in the enterprise.

Since 2016 when we partnered with the AI community to create the framework TorchPy for research in the field of AI, open collaboration has become a pillar of our success. With thousands of contributors behind more than 150,000 projects, PyTorch has become one of the leading platforms for research and production in the AI community.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the project has been handed over to the brand new PyTorch Foundation, which will be part of the Linux Foundationnon-profit technology consortium whose main mission is the collaborative development of open source software.

The creation of the PyTorch Foundation ensures that decisions will be made transparently by a diverse group of board members for years to come. The governing body will be made up of representatives from AMD, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Meta, Microsoft Azure and Nvidia, and will include new members over time.

Our commitment to community research in the field of AI

PyTorch was created around an open source community philosophy and the foundation will strive to continue this vision. As researchers and developers share their code in open source, other contributors around the world can share their work, learn from each other’s progress, and then in turn contribute to the AI community. .

In the long term, contributors to the framework will benefit from the governance, the diversity of the management team and the additional investments brought by the new partners of the PyTorch foundation. The foundation will strive to respect four principles: to remain open source, to maintain a neutral brand strategy, to remain fair and to forge a recognized technical identity. She will make sure to clearly separate the operational governance from the technical governance of PyTorch and will make it one of her priorities.

Meta will continue to invest in PyTorch and use it as the primary framework for its AI research and production. This transition will not in itself involve any changes to the PyTorch code, core project, or developer operating models.

We’ve worked tirelessly to grow the community behind PyTorch’s success, involving hundreds of engineers in the framework and fostering product development and community outreach.

Open science is at the heart of our work in AI: code release for important language models, self-supervised computer vision systems, new innovative datasets, embedded AI platforms And much more. We are convinced that this approach makes it possible to accelerate the creation and deployment of new systems that answer real needs and fundamental questions about the nature of intelligence. The creation of the PyTorch Foundation places the entire AI community in a unique position to advance the industry across all disciplines.
