Global AI Summit 2022 kicks off with the launch of several new international initiatives

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, September 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ —The World AI Summitofficially opened on Tuesday, bringing together prominent private sector leaders, government officials and academic professionals from around the world for a series of discussions on the future of AI. This three-day summit, organized by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), is expected to bring together more than 200 speakers from 90 countries and 10,000 participants.
At the G20 in 2020, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia fostered international consensus on the OECD Principles for Trustworthy AI. AI must be inclusive, human-centric, transparent, robust and accountable, said HE Abdullah Alswaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in Saudi Arabia. We cannot afford algorithms to be biased or sexist. We can’t afford not to have the right datasets and the right context.
Beyond the ethical application of AI, it is essential that we really advance AI together, sharing our best practices, expertise, resources and challenges, to ensure that no one is left behind. account in harnessing the potential of AI, added HE Abdullah Alghamdi, Chairman of the SDAIA.
Several announcements will be made at the summit, aimed at advancing the use of data to solve some of the biggest challenges facing the world in areas such as healthcare, energy and sustainable development. On the first day, ministers signed the Riyadh Declaration on the Call to Action on AI, an agreement outlining the long-term vision of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) to bring AI technology serving individuals, communities, nations and the world.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also unveiled its AI ethical principles on the opening day of the summit. Designed by the SDAIA and grounded in global and national standards, this framework will serve as a practical guide for embedding AI ethics throughout the AI system development lifecycle.
AminNasser, CEO of Aramco, Sebastian Thrun, CEO of KittyHawk, and JrgenSchmidhuber, Director of the AI Initiative at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), are among the speakers at the summit. Saudi ministers also participated in the discussions on the first day, including: HE Fajad Al-Jalajel, Minister of Health; HE Majid Bin Abdullah Al Kassabi, Minister of Commerce; and HE BandarIbrahim Alkhorayef, Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources. Journalists from the regional and international press also attended the summit in person and vialive broadcastaccessible to remote participants.
